How is QTI different from a regular ultrasound?

A standard hand-held ultrasound only uses reflected sound waves and depends heavily on the skill of the person performing the exam. QTI uses both transmitted and reflected sound, is fully automated and produces a true three-dimensional dataset rather than a single operator-dependent image.

Does QTI use radiation?

No. QTI uses low-frequency sound waves rather than X-rays, so there is no ionizing radiation involved at any point in the scan.

Is a QTI scan painful?

No. There is no compression involved. The breast rests gently in a warm water bath during the scan, and most patients describe the experience as comfortable.

How long does the scan take?

A typical scan takes about 10 to 20 minutes per breast, depending on the equipment and the reason for the exam.

Can QTI replace my mammogram?

No. QTI is FDA-cleared as an adjunct to mammography, meaning it is meant to be used in addition to your regular mammogram, not instead of it. Mammography still plays an important role, particularly in detecting calcifications.

What happens if QTI finds something that needs a closer look?

Can QTI be used to track a finding over time instead of doing a biopsy right away?
